IE 8 - Open/Save As Dialog - Clicking "Open" is not saving with filename
Hello, Okay, we have a reporting server that streams report data back to the client (IE8 on Windows 7) for download. The "File Download" dialog box opens up and all content attributes are set as they should be: Name: admin-test.xls Type: Microsoft Office Excel 97-2003 Worksheet, 16.0KB From : xxx-report-01 | Open | | Save | | Cancel | From this point, if you click | Save |, the FileName supplied to the "File Download" dialog box is provided to "Save As" dialog box which works great. The problem we are having is when clicking the | Open | button. If you click | Open |, that same FileName is not used to name the worksheet that is opened. Instead, the name of the web page that serves up the reporting data is used as the "name" of the file. This causes 2 issues of note: Because the extension of that "name" is not an excel extension....Excel complains about the fact that we are opening a possibly incompatible file and some features fail to work, and Because all reports are served via that same page, they all get named exactly the same. This means that you have to close/save off any previously opened reports you have run prior before you can open any other report. Or, worse, the report runs for 10 minutes or more and then you get the simple "This is already opened message" and you have to re-run it. This may seem inconsequential, but in a business environment, we all know that users can have 234342356623 excel documents open at any given time to do their work and never know what they already have opened and everything should run sub second and never fail. It really is an annoyance that the browser does not use the supplied name when it "Opens" the downloaded file. We have been dealing with/working around it, but it comes up all the time. Any suggestions for resolving this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Larry I can reproduce this behavior if it ends up being due to our environment configuration: Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 8 GB RAM 64-bit OS Internet Explorer 8.0.7601.17514 64-bit

Try the steps mentioned below to resolve the Excel file open issue. Method 1: 1. Browse to the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 14. 2. Locate the file EXCEL.EXE. 3. Right click on the file and then click on the properties option. 4. Click on the compatibility tab. 5. Uncheck ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ checkbox and uncheck ‘Run this program as an administrator’ check box and click Ok. Now try to open Excel files. Method 2: 1. Open Excel. 2. Click File >> Options>>Advanced>>Under the General tab, uncheck ‘Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)’ and then click OK. 3. Close Excel and then try to open Excel files. If these steps do not resolve the issue, try to uninstall and reinstall Excel. Note: before uninstalling Excel ensure that you have the disk and its product key to reinstall it back. 2nd option http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2123563 Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thank you for your response. I have checked on the 3 suggestions you have posted with the following remarks: Method 1: Neither of those 2 options are checked. (no change) Method 2: The DDE option is not checked (no change) Reinstalling doesn't seem a likely resolution as we have many users observing this improper naming. But, I will have a help desk guy install a fresh copy of excel on some box to test that it still occurs. 2nd options: This KB article does not appear to be relevant to my issue. None of the 3 symptoms pertain to the issue I describe. The file being downloaded does open. The issue is that the FileName the server is providing in the response is not being used when the Excel Application opens the file when | Open | is clicked in the "File Download" dialog box.
